How to count messages in a WhatsApp export

A 10,000-line text file does not necessarily contain 10,000 messages. A useful count starts by recognising where each message begins.

01

One message can occupy several lines

A long message with line breaks is still one message. The parser joins continuation lines to the preceding timestamped message. Counting newline characters would inflate the result.

02

Attachments and system notices need context

Exports may contain an attachment placeholder rather than the media itself. That does not reveal voice-note duration or video length. System notices, such as a membership change, should not be mistaken for a member writing a message. Read import warnings when the format is unfamiliar.

03

Compare like with like

Use the same export and date scope when comparing members. Missing older history, deleted messages, changed names or unsupported date formats can affect a result. A member total describes this file, not every message the person ever sent.

Questions before you start

Can you recover messages missing from the export?

No. The tool only processes the file you select on your device.

What should I check before sharing a total?

Check the recognised participants, first and last dates, import warnings and a small sample of the original file. Do not upload the private file to ask for help.
