New Year group chat awards: a recap, not a ranking
A year-end recap works best when it celebrates stories rather than judging who had the best year. Let people choose what to bring back and what to leave private. If you use an export, check its first and last dates: a file that ends in October cannot tell the whole year’s story.
Choose the right kind of award
The existing Group Chat Awards Beta is free. It works with a supported WhatsApp text export or one Telegram JSON chat. Statistics describe the selected year or whole imported file, not a complete history. These ideas do not add new automatic awards to the tool.
Ask everyone before processing their conversation and again before sharing a card or quote. Keep names anonymous unless participants choose otherwise. Chat files are processed in your browser; they are not uploaded. A card you send to a messaging app is shared with that app and its recipients.

The Year’s Shared Pages
Show the message total for the selected year with the actual export coverage. It does not include missing or unexported history.
Available tool statisticThe Longest Running Thread
Celebrate the largest run of consecutive message days in the selected year; days with one participant message qualify.
Available tool statisticThe Year’s Emoji Signature
Reveal the most-used visible emoji for the chosen year. The result is a group frequency count, not an emotion summary.
Available tool statisticThe Opening Memory
Invite someone to choose an early memory from the available period; do not call it the group’s first-ever message.
Human nominationThe Unexpected Highlight
Choose a small event that became a happy memory without being planned as a milestone.
Human nomination
Give useful contributions their moment
The Plan That Happened
Recognize a shared plan that became real and include all willing contributors, rather than only the person who announced it.
Human nominationThe Helpful Habit
Nominate an optional routine that made the group easier to enjoy, without expecting the creator to continue forever.
Human nominationThe Beginner’s Courage
Celebrate someone who shared a first attempt at a hobby or project and let them choose the part to revisit.
Human nominationThe Credit Where Due
Read an example of someone acknowledging another person’s contribution; ask both before naming them.
Human nominationThe Change of Plan Win
Pick a time the group adapted kindly when circumstances changed, leaving the private reason for the change out.
Human nomination
Save the stories, not the embarrassing screenshots
The Original One-liner
Invite authors to submit their own short joke. A nomination is not permission to publish the full surrounding conversation.
Human nominationThe Shared Discovery
Choose a public place, activity, or idea the group was glad to find, without revealing anyone’s private routine.
Human nominationThe Question We Remember
Nominate a question that led to a story people still enjoy, using human memory rather than invented thread analytics.
Human nominationThe Photo With a Story
Ask a willing photographer to tell one approved image’s story; do not automatically expose media from the chat export.
Human nominationThe Kindest Reframe
Recognize a message that offered a useful perspective on an everyday problem, with its recipient’s consent.
Human nomination
Leave space for the next chapter
The Tradition to Keep
Let the group choose an enjoyable ritual it would like to continue, with no attendance requirement.
Human nominationThe Experiment to Try
Give a collective award to one small optional idea for the new year rather than predicting individual success.
Human nominationThe Welcome to New Voices
Thank members who made joining the group easier and invite newer friends to choose which moments to share.
Human nominationThe Permission to Pause
Acknowledge that people can step back from a chat and still belong; never show an absence chart.
Human nominationThe Group, As We Are
Close with a shared thank-you that includes willing participants without assigning friendship scores or improvement targets.

Make it an awards night
- Choose the period together. For 2026, show “2026 so far” whenever the included history is incomplete rather than implying a finished annual record.
- Ask for one joyful moment and one helpful contribution people want to recognize. Nobody must reveal a personal milestone.
- Pick six categories, mix individual and collective awards, and allow anonymous or joint nominations.
- Before midnight or at a later gathering, give each award one minute. Do not turn the result into resolutions people must keep.
- Review the card together, then share only the agreed version. Keep the source export on the owner’s device.
